How do I get a better Bass(Kick) Drum sound?
I can’t help feel my bass(kick) drum sounds like cr*p. It resonates way too much, and its not a deep quick sound as it should be. How can I fix this? I have a pillow in the case, and there is no hole on the outside-facing head. Any tips?
First, you should know that the bass drum sound that you hear on recordings and at concerts has been changed by the microphones and the EQ settings that they use on the soundboard, the bass drum is actually resonating more than what you can hear. If the bass drum doesn’t resonate, it will be way too quiet.
I used a pillow when I first started playing drums about 10 years ago, but that is something that I shouldn’t have done. It makes the bass sound really dead. Now I use the Evans EMAD 2 bass batter. It has a built in foam ring that gets rid of the higher pitched sounds and keeps the bass drum from resonating too much.
On the resonant head, I take a strip of felt that is a few inches wide and place it several inches off center across the opening of the shell then place the head over it. Then pull the felt strip so that it is not loose underneath the head and then tune the head. Finally, cut the excess felt off.
You could even put another strip of felt to the other side of the center to add more muffling. If you don’t buy the EMAD 2 head, You can use 1 or 2 felt strips on the batter head as well. Experiment with the placement and width of the felt strips till you find a sound that you like.
Also make sure that the head is tightend evenly at each lug. Tap the head with a stick near each lug and tighten or loosen that lug until the pitch is about the same at each place that you hit with your stick.
